“The World Cup is a huge opportunity for all of us. We have worked really, really hard as individuals and as a team. I always try to be relaxed and as balanced as I can be as a person,” Rahul said.
“There is bound to be disappointment if you are not scoring runs but the support staff has always been very helpful. Whether I do well or not I try to judge myself on whether my mindset is right, and whether I am fulfilling the role and responsibilities that the team expects me to do. If I think I am doing that well, I can go to sleep peacefully. Today was an opportunity for me to stand up and do well. I got a start and I continued.”
Asked how tricky the situation had been for India and what the mood in the change room was during the rain break, Rahul said, “It was a very important game for us. We’ve put ourselves in uncomfortable and difficult situations before so now when we are in those situations we know how we have prepared. So there is confidence within us.”
On whether the rain break worked in India’s favour, he said, “Litton played an exceptional knock and innings like these put pressure on opposition teams. He hit the bowlers off good length. But even without the rain break, we knew that once the Powerplay was over, we could put pressure on them. We had that confidence.”
Rahul also picked Virat Kohli’s brains on match eve and talked about the conditions in Australia. “We spoke about mindset and how we have been coming to Australia for some years but this time, the conditions have been very challenging for batters. He (Kohli) has been getting runs and that means he has been doing something right. So I wanted to know what it is that he is doing.”
