San Francisco continues to disprove that old Mark Twain saying, “Buy land, they’re not making it anymore” – at least in terms of creating new parks. Last year, it debuted the stunning Tunnel Tops in the Presidio that sits athwart a busy freeway, and now it’s revealed designs for a nearby green space called Outpost Meadow that will completely transform a parking lot. (See below for the renderings.)
The 1.5-acre park is technically part of the Tunnel Tops and was designed by the same landscape architecture firm, James Corner Field Operations, famed for creating the New York High Line. The new stretch will take the place of an asphalt lot near the Sports Basement sporting goods store, which will remain open during construction that’s slated to start in August. The tentative date for the Outpost Meadow’s public opening is at the end of 2025.
What should visitors expect? Well, there will be an array of large picnic “banquettes,” some with barbecue grills, that will provide seating for nearly 240 people. There’s going to be a big lawn for lounging and admiring the Golden Gate Bridge and its attendant wildlife and weather conditions. (Hello, Karl the Fog!) There will be shade and wheelchair-accessible tables and trails, and easy access to the rotating food truck encampment, Presidio Pop Up, with all its international snacking and beer and cocktail offerings.
There’s a hefty environmental aspect as well, the Presidio Trust explains:
“In addition to visitor amenities, Outpost Meadow will deliver critical environmental benefits and help the park be more climate resilient. The meadow will replace asphalt with coastal habitat for native plants and wildlife. The permeable surface will absorb water during heavy rains, reducing the flooding that was seen during the recent severe winter storms. It will also improve water quality in the San Francisco Bay by redirecting some of the stormwater away from storm drains and into on-site retention basins. In total, park managers have converted about 180 acres of asphalt in the Presidio to permeable surface over the past two decades.”
Grant funding for the upcoming space is coming from California’s “Outdoors for All” initiative. Take a look at some of the designs for Outpost Meadow, starting with this “before” rendering of the current parking lot:
