Is it a bird? Is it a plane? As of right now, we have no idea what Selena Gomez‘s new back tattoo is. New York City-based tattoo parlor Bang Bang Tattoo shared a black-and-white photo of the Rare Beauty founder and Only Murders in the Building actor’s new ink on December 15.
In the photo, Gomez’s back is facing the camera, providing a glimpse at her new ink. The photo of her back appears to have been taken from a distance in the front corner of a building, leaving many of the tattoo parlor’s followers (including myself), speculating on the design. Several users wrote in the comments that they think the new tattoo is of a dream catcher.
On the other hand, many people also shared how difficult to tell what it is. One Instagram user blatantly expressed their frustration with not being able to interpret what the new ink is, writing, “WHAT IS IT???” Due to how far away the camera is from Gomez’s back, another user declared their inability to discern the design with the plea, “CLOSER PLEASE.”
If we had to take a guess at what exactly this mysterious tattoo is, we would have to agree with some Instagram users who commented that it might be a bleeding heart. Several lines of various sizes seem to be protruding from a shape comprised of two arches, leading us to safely assume that Gomez’s tattoo is perhaps a bleeding heart.

Whatever the design may be, her new tattoo looks beautiful, even though we’re not sure what it is. Allure has reached out to Bang Bang Tattoo for comment, and once we hear more details behind Gomez’s new back tattoo, we’ll be sure to add them all right here.
