Takeaways: Jalen Green snaps slump, Alperen Sengun dominates in loss to Clippers

For the young Houston Rockets (1-8), the losing streak is now at five games after another loss to the Los Angeles Clippers (4-4) in Wednesday’s home setback at Toyota Center. Perennial All-Star candidate Paul George again led the way for the veteran-laden Clippers with a game-high 28 points on 10-of-20 shooting (50.0%).

But unlike Monday’s loss in Los Angeles, the 109-101 result (box score) in Houston featured promising signs for some of the home team’s most important young prospects. The Rockets fell behind by 18 early before fighting back to take a brief lead in the third quarter and ultimately keeping the game tight until the final whistle.

Second-year big man Alperen Sengun had the best night of his 2022-23 season to date, putting up 26 points and 13 rebounds on 8-of-13 shooting (61.5%). Meanwhile, second-year guard Jalen Green added 22 points and 4 rebounds on efficient 9-of-17 shooting (52.9%), in stark contrast to his slump on Houston’s recent 0-4 road trip.

Unfortunately, other key Rockets players were not as efficient. Veteran guard Eric Gordon had no points on 0-of-4 shooting, while rookie Jabari Smith Jr. scored only 2 points on 1-of-10 shooting (10.0%). Kevin Porter Jr. had 22 points, 7 assists, and 7 rebounds, but he turned the ball over 6 times and shot just 7-of-19 (36.8%).

Scroll on for highlights, analysis and postgame interviews from Wednesday night at Toyota Center. The Rockets will head back out on the road for another extended trip starting Saturday in Minnesota, with tipoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Central.
