The Chengalpet division of Tamil Nadu’s forest department will receive a felicitation from PETA India (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) for their remarkable work. The Chengalpet forest division successfully rescued four parrots that were about to be illegally sold to people carrying out parrot astrology scams. The forest department did not only rescue the parrots but also arrested two men allegedly involved in this illegal sale.

PETA India will honor the Tamil Nadu forest department with “A Hero to Animals Award” for their commendable work in rescuing the birds, allowing them to live freely, and arresting the responsible men.

While speaking to the Times of India, PETA India’s Chief Executive Officer and veterinarian, Dr Manilal Valliyate, stated that purchasing and selling these Indian birds is illegal. It can result in seven years of imprisonment and a fine of INR 25,000. PETA India commends the Tamil Nadu forest department for saving these beautiful birds. They do not deserve to live in capitivity and must fly freely again.

He added, “Caged birds have nothing to sing about. Birds belong in the sky, never in cages, and we urge anyone who is keeping a bird in this way to turn them in for rehabilitation and to be reunited with their flock.”

According to a survey, there are many birds that are taken away from their families and sold illegally as pets or to fraud fortune tellers. Birds in the wild are captured using nets and traps, while some fledglings are taken away from their nests. The birds caught in nets and traps are at risk of being severely injured as they panic and try their best to break free. Most birds even lose their lives in their struggle to free themselves.

Those who survive are packed into small boxes and are in the process of being sold. An estimated 60% of birds lose their lives in transit due to thirst, fear, panic, injured wings or legs, and suffocation.

The ones who survive it live their lonely lives in captivity. These birds mainly suffer from loneliness, stress, anxiety, depression, and malnutrition. Several organizations are constantly working to save these birds and allowing them to fly freely.
