A Bangladesh cricket team fan cries in Chattogram after Tamim Iqbal retired from international cricket.

Further Twitter reaction on Tamim Iqbal’s retirement:

Tamim Iqbal announced his retirments in Chattogram a day after Bangladesh lost to Afghanistan in the first of three ODI series in the city. “This is the end for me. I have given my best. I have tried my best. I am retiring from international cricket from this moment,” Tamim said.

The cricketer confirmed he won’t take any further part in the ongoing Afghanistan series at home and it wasn’t a decision taken in haste as Tamim Iqbal broke into tears. “Yesterday against Afghanistan was my last international game. It was not a sudden decision.

“I was thinking about the different reasons. I don’t want to mention here. I have spoken to my family members about it. I thought this is the right time for me to retire from international cricket,” he said while sobbing.

Tamim Iqbal, who retired from the T20Is earlier, was serving as the ODI captain at the time of his retirement. The Bangladesh Cricket Board is yet to name his successor. All-rounder Shakib Al-Hasan, who is currently the Test and T20 skipper, is seen as the favourite to don the hat of captain.

Tamim Iqbal broke into the international scene back in 2007 following an impressive show in the U-19 World Cup at home. The opener memorably scored a half-century against India at the ODI World Cup the same year as a star-studded India famously lost to Bangladesh for the first time in World Cup before making a group stage exit.
