OK, so, at this point, you’ve probably watched the She-Hulk: Attorney at Law finale, right?
Which means you’re up to date on the fourth-wall-breaking conclusion, in which She-Hulk confronts the show’s writing room and “K.E.V.I.N.” (get it?) to come up with a different ending than what was originally planned.
Well, it turns out that meta moment was even more meta than we realized — because according to Tatiana Maslany, She-Hulk really did almost end in a different way.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Tatiana revealed that there were actually 20 different endings in discussion — and that two of them were ultimately filmed.
According to Tatiana, the alternate ending was “very different, a little more serious and less like” what her character Jen (aka She-Hulk) ultimately came up with.
“It was [more of] She-Hulk, so it was way too expensive, first off,” she explained while also saying that the alternate ending had a “different strategy” than what they eventually went with.
“The thing that I love about this one is that we get back to Jen feeling like K.E.V.I.N.’s her collaborator and like an equal, and that her ideas deserve respect,” Tatiana added, before talking more about why she’s proud of the way She-Hulk concluded.
“I couldn’t believe we got to do it. Because it’s the kind of writing, it’s the kind of dismantling that I get so excited about as an actor and as an audience member, and as a creative person. It’s the stuff I’m most interested in.”
“It’s such a huge moment and it requires so much clarity of idea, because it really is Jen speaking her direct truth about herself. It’s the moment when she is articulating that things aren’t good enough, that this isn’t what she wants or deserves, and to name that, you have to know yourself really well.”
Ultimately, Tatiana credits the show’s head writer, Jessica Gao, for steering its trajectory toward its desired conclusion. “It took a while to find it, but Jess always had that idea and it was always going to destroy things and at the same time build things again.”
