Team Malaysia Announces Overwatch World Cup 2023 Committee

0

Late last month, Blizzard Entertainment announced the return of the Overwatch World Cup, which has had a three-year hiatus since 2019. Malaysia was selected as one of the countries to represent the Asia-Pacific region, which first entailed the selection for the country’s competition committee. Team Malaysia has since announced the country’s committee members taking up the roles of General Manager, Coach and Social Lead.

As per the announcement on the Team Malaysia social media accounts, the roles above are taken by Awang Ilyas Awang Mahsen, Jason Tan and Wong Jun Shin, respectively. They are also known respectively by their handles BawangByte, blueice and Shizuku.

Overwatch World Cup 2019

For this year’s Overwatch World Cup, Team Malaysia is among six other countries in the APAC B group, of which only two countries will get a spot at the LAN finals event. This is as opposed to the A group, where the six countries in it will be competing for three slots of the 16 total at the finals. Beyond APAC, countries in the Americas and EMEC regions will have their own A and B groups competing for their own respective five spots in the main event. Rounding up the 16 teams will be one from China, which will get a direct invitation to the finals.

Speaking of which, the competition committee will still have to finalise a team of seven players, which means holding team tryouts. This must be done by April. Those who made it to the team will then have to compete against other countries’ teams to earn said 16 spots in the LAN finals in June. If you think you have what it takes to be one of the seven, or if you just want to keep up to date on Team Malaysia’s progress in the Overwatch World Cup 2023, then you should probably join the team’s official Discord channel, linked here.
