One of the most exciting things about The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is the addition of the many different Zonai Devices that Link can use while journeying through Hyrule, The Depths, and the Sky Islands. These devices can help you reach new places as you navigate the massive game.
One downside to Zonai Devices is that they require Zonai Batteries in order to operate. The Zonai Battery can be upgraded 45 times, meaning you need to collect a lot of Crystallized Charges if you want to reach the maximum. Here is a guide to help you learn to extend that battery.
Updated by Erin Rice on July 5, 2023: This update included useful information on how to find Zonai Charges. It also included maps of all Yiga Clan Hideout locations, relevant links to help readers, and information on the Temple bosses in The Depths.
How To Get More Batteries
In order to get more Zonai Batteries, you must first obtain Crystallized Charges. These are items that can be taken to Crystal Refineries and transformed into Zonai Battery Wells. Each Battery contains 3 wells. There are 8 Batteries altogether, and each Battery can be upgraded twice. It will cost you 100 Crystallized Charges per Battery upgrade. You will start off with one Battery, so you will be able to upgrade your Battery 45 times, requiring 4,500 Crystallized Charges.
Where To Find Crystallized Charges
Thankfully, Crystallized Charges aren’t too hard to come by. You can find them by trading Zonaite for some, defeating Yiga hideouts, defeating bosses around The Depths, and rechallenging the Temple bosses that lurk within The Depths. Basically, most of the places you find Crystallized Charges are found within The Depths.
You can sometimes find chests on the Sky Islands that offer the player Crystallized Charges when opened. However, those aren’t as common as the ones in The Depths. If you need some tips on navigating The Depths, you can check that out here.
Trade Zonaite For Crystallized Charges
There are large abandoned mines within The Depths. The mines offer a place for Link to trade Zonaite for Crystallized Charges. Thankfully, the mines are all located in important locations and can easily be found.
- Abandoned Hebra Mine (under Rito Village)
- Abandoned Kara Kara Mine (under Kara Kara Bazaar)
- Abandoned Gerudo Mine (under Gerudo Town)
- Abandoned Great Central Mine (under the Temple of Time Ruins on the Great Plateau)
- Abandoned Lurelin Mine (under Lurelin Village)
- Abandoned Hateno Mine (under Hateno Village)
- Abandoned Kakariko Mine (under Kakariko Village)
- Abandoned Lanayru Mine (under Mount Lanayru)
- Abandoned Tarrey Mine (under Tarrey Town)
- Abandoned Eldin Mine (under Goron City)
Each of these mines offers Link 5 Large Crystallized Charges (100 Crystallized Charges) for 15 Large Zonaite (3 each). You can also trade 3 Zonaite for a single Crystallized Charge. These shops do replenish every 24 hours, so you can come to get more pretty often. All you need to do is stay at an inn or wait by a fire.
Defeat Yiga Clan Hideouts In The Depths
While exploring The Depths, chances are you have come across the Yiga Clan at one point or another. If you find one of their hideouts (usually located in or near the abandoned mines previously mentioned), you can find chests containing Large Crystallized Charges. These equal 20 Crystallized Charges. The map above shows the location of each Yiga Hideout along with its Yiga Schematic for obtaining Autobuilds.
Doing the quest “Master Kohga Of The Yiga Clan” will also lead you to the many different Yiga Clan hideouts in The Depths. You will learn that the Yiga Clan is attempting to find as many Crystallized Charges as possible for some big project they are doing. This is why you can find these around their hideouts.
Every Yiga Hideout in The Depths has a Yiga Schematic for your Autobuild. Make sure you pick these up while you’re at it. There’s a total of 34 in The Depths.
Fight Overworld Bosses In The Depths
The overworld bosses in The Depths (Frox, King Gleeok, Lynels, etc.) will sometimes drop Crystallized Charges that Link can use to increase his Battery life as well. Most of these bosses can be found roaming The Depths, looking for adventurers to attack.
Refight The Temple Bosses In The Depths
Another thing you may have noticed while exploring The Depths is that you can refight the four Temple bosses. There are certain locations where these bosses will spawn. After beating each boss for the first time, you can obtain a Huge Crystallized Charge. This equals 100 Crystallized Charges (or 1 Battery Well). You can only obtain the chest once, but the bosses will respawn after every Blood Moon. Each boss has 3 different spawn points.
Where To Find Crystal Refineries
After you have gathered your Crystallized Charges, you will need to find a Crystal Refinery to take them to. Thankfully, there are 3 Crystal Refineries located around the game. One is in the Sky Islands, one is in Hyrule, and the other is in The Depths.
1. The Great Sky Island – Located right in front of the Nachoyah Shrine. This is the fourth and final Shrine needed to enter the Temple of Time on the Great Sky Island at the beginning of the game.
2. Lookout Landing – This is located directly outside the door in Josha’s office. The door is just beside the Bargainer Statue at Lookout Landing. It is hard to miss as it is on the giant rock formation that fell from the Sky Islands.
3. The Great Abandoned Central Mine – This mine, located directly below the Temple of Time Ruins on the Great Plateau, is one of the 10 mines you can trade Zonaite for Crystallized Charges.
Other Ways of Extending Your Battery
While Crystallized Charges are the only way to permanently extend your Battery, there are other ways to temporarily extend it.
Zonai Charges
Zonai Charges are items that drop from the many different Zonai Constructs roaming around the game. They will add a very small amount of additional Battery to your Zonai Battery. If you use Large Zonai Charges, it will stop an entire Battery from depleting for a certain period of time. They can be useful if you’re close to where you need to be but are running out of Battery. You can also find these items by killing monsters such as the Flux Constructs.
Zonaite Armor
The Zonaite Armor set is a difficult set to get. Each piece requires completing puzzles in the Sky Islands. However, as long as you’re wearing the full set, it will extend your Battery life. It may not seem like it at first, but once you have a lot of Battery, you can tell the difference. Enhancing the full set to the second level will make this work even better than originally.
