Section 144 has been imposed in the Hazaribag and Giridih districts of Jharkhand to prevent the spread of rumours related to the alleged mob lynching of a 17-year-old last week.

Rupesh Kumar Pandey, 17, died after allegedly being assaulted on February 5 at Kariyadpur village in Barhi police station area of the district during an immersion procession after Saraswati Puja.

An irate mob torched six vehicles in Jharkhand’s Hazaribag district after a boy was killed during a clash between members of two communities.

A named FIR was lodged against 27 persons, besides many unknown people.

The relatives of the boy have demanded action under the provisions of the Prevention of Mob Violence and Mob Lynching Bill, 2021, which aims at providing “effective protection” of the constitutional rights of people and the prevention of mob violence.

Work in banks and other institutions was impacted as the internet services remained suspended for 36 hours following the incident.
