Plenty of athletes say they don’t pay any attention to what’s written about them. That doesn’t appear to be the case for Steve Smith.
The normally unfazed Australian batter has hit out at a social media post by a sports news outlet claiming England tearaway Jofra Archer “terrorised” the top-order of Smith’s side the last time the Ashes were played in England.
Smith and Archer were the main protagonists in a sensational day of cricket at Lords during the series four years ago, where the quick, who had only just burst onto the scene, struck the returning Aussie star in the helmet.
But Smith was quick to remind people even Archer couldn’t get him out.
Archer has been ruled out of the entire English summer, including the highly-anticipated Ashes series.
Smith hit back at a CODE Sports social media post linking to that story, which said “Steve Smith and co can breath a sigh of relief after an update from England’s medical staff this morning”.
“Terrorised? Remind me when I was dismissed by him…” Smith replied to the post.
It continues to fuel the Ashes fire, coming on the same day Nathan Lyon claimed Australia could win the series 5-0.
In just 10 hours, Smith’s reply has garnered more than 3000 retweets and almost 10,000 likes.
Archer had only just returned to international cricket after 17 months on the sidelines battling elbow and back injuries.
The 28-year-old played five matches for Mumbai Indians before the nagging injury ended his Indian Premier League stint last week.
A statement from the England and Wales Cricket Board read: “Sussex fast bowler Jofra Archer has been ruled out for the rest of the summer after recent scans revealed he has sustained a recurrence of a stress fracture to his right elbow.
“He will now spend time with the England and Sussex medical teams, who will work on his injury management.”
