Texas vs. Iowa State prediction and odds for Tuesday, January 17 (Bank on a defensive slugfest)

The Big 12 never disappoints. We all know Kansas will be good every year, but other than that, year in and year out, this conference gives us some of the best matchups in college basketball.

The No. 7 Texas Longhorns against the No. 12 Iowa State Cyclones will be one of those fantastic matchups in a great environment in Ames. Iowa State lost to Kansas 62-60 on Saturday in a classic Big 12 dogfight and now they’re up against the 15-2 Longhorns who just keep winning close games even without their Head Coach.

I can’t wait for this one, so let’s jump right into it and take a look at the odds for tonight.

Texas vs. Iowa State odds, spread and total

Texas vs. Iowa State prediction and pick

Texas is a fascinating team because it is obviously without Chris Beard and in losing him it has almost lost a sense of identity, but that might be a good thing.

The Longhorns are a very good team on the defensive end, because that’s the roster construction, 21st in defensive efficiency, but they can be a run-and-gun offense too.

They don’t dictate the terms, they let you decide how you want to play it and then way more often than not beat you at your own game. The exception was an insane 116-103 loss to K-State which they let turn into a track meet, but coming off of that they beat Oklahoma State, who wants to play slow, 56-46.

Iowa State is a lot like those Cowboys, they’ll want to slow this thing down big time. Iowa State is 310th in adjusted tempo, and fourth in defensive efficiency. I expect Texas will morph to that style and let the game slow down to a crawl if that’s what the Cyclones want. Texas is the more talented and efficient offensive team, I think they win it, but three of the Longhorns last four wins have come by four points or less. Instead of playing a side, I’ll take the under and enjoy watching Marcus Carr and Jaren Holmes use up all 30 seconds of the shot clock.
