More than £142,000 in Covid fines has still not been paid to Transport for London (TfL) from passengers who refused to wear masks.
Sadiq Khan confirmed that some 710 fixed penalty notices (FPNs) were still outstanding.
‘As all of the cases have passed the 14-day period, they will be valued at £200,’ the Mayor of London said.
‘Therefore, TfL estimates the total outstanding value is £142,000.’
Face coverings became compulsory on public transport in June 2020 to curb the spread of Covid.
While national rules were lifted just over a year later in July 2021, TfL continued to have masks as a ‘condition’ of carriage, although they could not issue FPNs.
The rules were reintroduced in November amid a third wave of Omicron, before all Covid restrictions were lifted in January as part of the UK’s plan for ‘living with the virus’.
TfL continued to enforce mask wearing until February 24, but still ‘strongly recommend’ passengers use them.
Mr Khan confirmed to the London Assembly that between February 24, 2021, and January 27, 2022, TfL prevented 7,283 people travelling on the Tube and ordered 2,325 people to leave the network.
Almost 4,000 FPNs (3,996) were issued for non-compliance with face covering rules.
