Taking a bite out of Thanksgiving

Americans are bracing for a costlier holiday this year, with inflation bringing steep increases in the price of food.

The American Farm Bureau Federation’s 37th annual survey provides a snapshot of the average cost of this year’s classic Thanksgiving feast for 10, which is $64.05, or just under $6.50 per person. That is a $10.74 increase, or 20%, from last year’s average of $53.31.

Wholesale turkey prices are at record highs after a difficult year for U.S. flocks. A particularly deadly strain of avian flu — first reported in February on an Indiana turkey farm — wiped out 49 million turkeys and other poultry in 46 states this year, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.

According to the Farm Bureau, general inflation, which slashes the purchasing power of consumers, is a significant factor in the increase in the average cost of this year’s Thanksgiving dinner. General inflation has been running 7% to 9% in recent months, while the most recent consumer price index report for food consumed at home revealed a 12% increase over the past year.

Formal Form

So you’ve bought your mean and cooked it, and now it is time to sit down to Thanksgiving. Cue Emily Post.

Post established herself as an expert on American manners with her book “Etiquette” in 1922.

The Emily Post Institute, a source of info on all things etiquette, says that being considerate, respectful and honest is more important than knowing which fork to use. That said, here’s a look at how to set up a formal place setting.

The formal setting is generally used for multiple-course meals or holiday dinners. It is an informal place setting taken to the next level. White linens are considered the most formal. The setting is basically organized in order of the courses of the meal.
