The politician went on to reiterate the tax increase is being introduced in a bid to combat the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
“I think the public appreciate that we spent a lot of money during covid and we do need to pay that money back,” Truss insisted.
Phillips remarked: “You must understand why I’m puzzled. You’re saying, ‘We’ve got to raise taxes and we’re going to rely on growth’.
“That’s what the Labour people come in and say, this is not what I expect from you, Liz Truss,” he commented.
