The former midfielder was officially unveiled as Ronald Koeman’s successor on Sunday.
The club legend will be tasked with lifting his old club out of their current slump with Barcelona currently ninth in La Liga following a turbulent summer that saw Lionel Messi leave.
While the former Spain international cannot control the dire financial situation the club now finds itself in, he is expected to bring a new attitude to the dressing room and plans to enforce that change with some new rules.
AS report 10 new rules with be enforced.
- The squad are now expected to arrive at the training ground 90 minutes before training sessions begin.
- Staff are expected to arrive at the training ground two hours before training sessions begin.
- All players are expected to eat lunch at the club’s Ciutat Esportiva training facility with club’s nutritionists overseeing what is on the menu.
- The return of a fine system that will see players penalised for misdemeanours including showing up late.
- Repeat offences will see the fine double. AS report that some players were docked up to €6,000 for being guilty of the same offences over and over again.
- In the 48 hours before a game, players must be back home no later than midnight to ensure they are in the best possible condition on matchday by leading an ‘orderly life’ on the eve of games.
- Only those who impress in training will be selected in the starting XI – the rest will remain on the bench or not be called upon at all.
- If activities or obligations outside football begin to affect a player’s performance then the player in question will be supervised by a member of the coaching staff. Any private trips during the season cannot be sanctioned without permission from the coach.
- Any activities deemed a risk to a player’s fitness or physical health will be outlawed. Electric bikes and surfing are just two of the activities no longer permitted by Xavi and would be considered as a ‘flagrant breach of contract’ under the new regime.
- Clean image is key. Everyone associated with the club from backroom staff to players will be expected to carry themselves in a manner befitting of the club’s history and traditions when in the public eye.
