The Kozhikode Corporation in association with Calicut Animal Rescuers and Encouragers (CARE) as well as the People for Animal organization (PFA Calicut) had organized an adoption camp in Kerala, India in the month of November 2021. This adoption camp was organized at the Tagore Centenary Hall. The camp was purely for stray animals and it was called the ‘Bow Bow Fest’. The organizers witnessed a large number of people enthusiastically participating in this adoption camp.
The animals were handed over to their new pet parents after being vaccinated. A certificate of adoption will soon be handed over to each new pet parent. The organizers took 80 stray puppies to this adoption camp and 70 of them were adopted. There are many people who brought puppies from the street at this adoption camp. They were handed over to the organizers so that they could be vaccinated and put up for adoption.
While speaking to The Hindu, a volunteer at CARE who was also supervising the whole event, Derrick Paul stated that “There were many takers for the stray dogs, some of them were brought from the Animal Birth Control Centre of the Corporation while we had brought some too”. The organizers brought the puppies in cardboard boxes.
There were very few people who adopted female pups. The organizers mentioned that people were afraid of the female pups getting pregnant. People would be more open to adopting a female pup if the organization would offer to sterilize the pups after six months for free of cost.
