When your outfit doubles as a disco ball, does it need much else? Clearly not—and this week’s best dressed stars understood this approach, opting for refined silhouettes that allowed for their gowns’ sparkle factor to shine totally on their own.
Take Katie Holmes at the 2022 CFDA Awards (aka the “Oscars of fashion”): She wore Jonathan Simkhai’s glittery cage dress with a fringed hemline—a dress that sparkled but didn’t feel overwhelming, thanks to its long, clean shift shape. At the 19th Marrakech International Film Festival in Marrakech, Morocco, Diane Kruger also shimmered in Givenchy’s metallic silver gown. The embellishment all over was maximal, but the sleek turtleneck silhouette made it feel pared-back and unfussy.
Long, minimal shapes ruled the week. At the premiere of her new Netflix film Falling for Christmas, Lindsay Lohan looked elegant in her sheer, long-sleeved Valentino dress with floral embroidery. (All hail the Lindsay renaissance!) At the 2022 Guggenheim Gala, The Woman King’s Thuso Mbedu also lived out her princess fantasy in a Dior Couture cotton–canvas number that had a long, full skirt. “You couldn’t see my shoe, but I felt like Cinderella when I slipped into my Dior slipper,” the star told Vogue this week.
