The Best Dressed Stars This Week Slipped Into Streamlined Shapes

0

Simple can often be mistaken for boring, but this week’s red carpets proved that a streamlined shape can still bring some drama. Instead of dramatic shapes or over-the-top embellishments, the best dressed stars opted for designs that were decidedly pared-back—with just enough visual interest to make them shine.

Take Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, when she attended a Christmas carol service at Westminster Abbey. Her crimson Eponine coat was simple enough, but the collarless neckline and double-breasted buttons made it feel modern and sharp. The same goes for Selena Gomez’s tweed Self-Portrait dress worn to a screening of her documentary, My Mind and Me. The low-cut neckline and mini skirt length gave it a fun, youthful feel.

A few stylish celebrities upped the fashion ante with metallic or shimmering fabrics. At the premiere of Whitney Houston: I Want to Dance With Somebody in New York City, Naomi Ackie chose a Schiaparelli gown that was finished with silver chains and an elaborate flower design on the shoulder. At the L.A. premiere of Pale Blue Eye, Lucy Boynton’s white Chanel couture frock was also complete with puffed shoulders and a full, pleated skirt. Sure, it was a perfect dress for the step and repeat, but it could also turn heads while walking down the aisle.
