There was also a love of love for the colossal star-cast, who was introduced to us via some very funky posters. Say hello to the likes of Dua Lipa, Nicola Coughlan, Helen Mirren, Emma Mackey, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Issa Rae, Michael Cera, Rhea Pearlman, Emerald Fennell, Scott Evans, Ritu Arya, Jamie Demetriou, Hari Nef, Sharon Rooney, and Marisa Abela! Wow. But in particular, the trailer prompted a lot of fan theories and easter eggs, especially with many pointing out the movie’s plentiful references to the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz.
In the trailer, Barbie is first seen wearing a pink gingham dress very similar to the blue one worn by Judy Garland for her role in the movie, while later, the Mattel doll drives down a pink road which looks a lot like the yellow brick road. She also drives past a movie theatre, which features three Wizard of Oz posters, with the marquee reading, “Now Playing: The Wizard of Oz.” So what does all this likeness to the iconic movie mean? Well, many thought it marked Barbie’s adventure from Barbieland into a whole new world.
