Lesser-known Syros took second place on the coveted ranking which Conde Nast recommends for culture.
The quirky island hosts several festivals celebrating dance, film, classical music and jazz, and rembetiko. First created by a local musician, rembetiko is a form of Greek blues.
While Syros’s beaches aren’t quite as spectacular as those at some of Greece’s other hotspots, the island has a fast-growing foodie reputation.
Head to a beachside taverna to enjoy fresh fish, seafood, pastries and gelato, said to be some of Greece’s best.
