When I found out I was pregnant, I swore up and down that I wouldn’t let my bump change my style. I would still wear my usual jeans (but just employ the old hairband through the button hole trick). My blazers would surely still work with a bump, and I was pretty sure my favourite dresses had enough stretch to stay on wardrobe rotation for the next nine months.
This approach lasted for the first trimester, but I very quickly learned that people invest in the best maternity clothes from killer maternity brands for a reason. It’s not just about the growing bump. Your whole body changes during pregnancy – and so does what you find yourself reaching for in your wardrobe (case in point: maternity leggings, maternity knickers, nursing bras, joggers and sleep bras). That’s not to say you don’t still want to dress nicely and feel like yourself – sometimes. After all, being pregnant can be pretty hard, and when you’ve already given up your evening gin, cheese board and sushi, you don’t want to give up your personal style too.
The solution? To add a few carefully selected maternity pieces to your existing wardrobe. Classics like maternity jeans (these Topshop over-bump mom jeans are honestly life changing), some high-quality maternity leggings and a plain fitted dress, plus a couple of trend-led pieces will go a long way over your nine month pregnancy (and beyond).
For affordable trend-led pieces to amp up these wardrobe staples, ASOS has the widest range of maternity wear on the high street. This Khaite inspired top is perfect for date night (even if that’s just at home) and this knitted rollneck dress is perfect now the temperatures have well and truly dropped. H&M’s MAMA range and Mango’s maternity line are also filled with gems that will keep you and bump looking chic.
If you’re after maternity clothing that can transition into your new role as mum, brands like Seraphine have stylish pieces you can wear through pregnancy. Their clever designs and hidden zippers allow you to breastfeed with ease once your bump becomes an IRL baby – because even then, you’ll want to look and feel great.
As you can see, bump-friendly clothing and brands have come a long way recently. There are now a growing number of high street brands with dedicated maternity lines, as well as specialist brands catering just for mamas to be.
