The best used ULEZ-compliant diesel and hybrid cars on the market

Drivers in London are already dealing with the Ultra Low Emission Zone, but from August, an estimated five million additional people will be included in the scheme. All petrol cars need to meet Euro 4 emissions regulations, which are generally from 2005. Diesel vehicles, however, must adhere to stricter rules, with Euro 6 including vehicles manufactured after September 2015.

Mark Oakley, Director of AA Cars, said many Londoners will now be looking for new cars, but affordability will most likely be at the top of their checklist.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, he said: “It is not just drivers in London who may be weighing up buying a less polluting car. Similar schemes to the ULEZ are already in place around other UK cities, such as Bristol and Birmingham, while trials are underway in other areas.

“It is not just small city cars that are ULEZ-compliant, as affordable seven-seaters like the Volkswagen Touran make the grade, and could be a good option for families.

“Drivers are understandably keen to save money where they can at the moment. We recommend that anyone buying a used car gets a vehicle inspection from a qualified engineer before parting with any money, as this will minimise the likelihood of you running into any unexpected – and potentially costly – issues in the future.”

Toyota Prius (Hybrid)

The Prius was the first true mass-market hybrid and helped establish the brand’s dominance with electrified models around the world for the last decade.

It is one of the more affordable hybrid models, with high mileage examples starting from just £3,500, with AA Cars recommending the slightly more expensive third-generation Prius.

The updated model, introduced in 2009, will meet all ULEZ requirements. It is incredibly reliable with models regularly clocking over 250,000 miles. A vehicle with under 100,000 models can be purchased for around £7,500.

Mazda 6 (Diesel)

To avoid the charge, most diesel drivers will swap their vehicle, either for a cleaner diesel vehicle or an EV.

However, many diesel cars were compliant well before the September 2015 cut-off date, including the third-generation Mazda 6, launched in 2013, of which, all diesel models are compliant.

Available as both a saloon and estate, the Mazda 6 offers a stylish design, a practical interior and a good reputation for reliability, with used prices also start from an attractive £5,000.

Mitsubishi Outlander (Hybrid)

If drivers predominantly do shorter trips around the city, but want the flexibility to go further without needing to charge, the popular Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV could be a suitable option.

Motorists can expect an electric range of between 15 and 25 miles, with shorter journeys potentially meaning they won’t need to fill up with petrol as often.

Outlanders registered before April 2017 also get free car tax, with all models meeting ULEZ requirements. Used models should start from around £9,500.
