The best walk in the UK is in a ‘beautiful place’

The expert team at AA have shared the UK’s best walking routes for a spring staycation. It’s time to lace up the hiking boots and enjoy some of the UK’s natural beauty.

Best walks in the UK

  1. St Just to Land’s End, Cornwall
  2. Cerne Abbas Giant, Dorset
  3. Llyn Idwal from Llyn Ogwen, Snowdonia
  4. Rydal Water, Lake District
  5. Ingleton Waterfalls, Yorkshire Dales

St Just to Lands End in Cornwall was named the best walk in the UK and described as a “beautiful” place.

An AA spokesperson said: “By way of taking the long view towards Land’s End, this walk follows footpaths from the old mining town of St Just and then along an exhilarating stretch of coast that runs south to Sennen Cove and to Land’s End.

“The path soon leaves the more obvious mining area and follows the delightful shoreline towards Land’s End, dropping to sea level as it reaches the great beaches of Whitesand Bay and the granite cliffs of the Land’s End area.

“The beaches here are some of Cornwall’s finest surfing venues. Beyond Sennen’s charming seafront, the path climbs once more and soon reaches Land’s End.”

The UK’s best walk highlights some of the most beautiful parts of the Cornish coastline with stunning views the whole way.

A tourist who visited Sennen beach wrote on Tripadvisor: “This is a beautiful place and I really enjoyed the visit.”

However, tourists might want to avoid posing for a photo at the Land’s End landmark, as it was recently named one of the country’s biggest tourist traps.

The Cerne Abbas Giant walk in Dorset was named the UK’s second best route for a spring hike.

An AA spokesperson said: “The chalk outline of the Cerne Abbas Giant is so familiar that the reality, seen from the hillside opposite rather than above from the air, is a surprise.

“His proportions change at this shallower angle, and this of course is how he was designed to be seen – all 180ft of him.

“Quite when he was made, and by whom, is a mystery. Was he drawn by the Romans, a portrait of the demi-god Hercules? Could he be a post-medieval caricature of Oliver Cromwell?”

The 5.5 mile walk takes around two and a half hours and explores the country paths and tracks in the Cerne Valley.

The UK’s third best walking route was located in Wales, in the beautiful area of Snowdonia and takes around two and a half hours to complete.

The AA spokesperson said: “The sunshine can paint a very different picture, with golden rocks that are a playground for the modern-day climber, and small mountain birds such as the wheatear and ring ouzel flitting through the grasses.”

The Lake District and Yorkshire Dales were home to the two other walks to make the top five best routes.

In the Lake District, tourists will be able to explore Rydal Water and the surrounding views on a three mile hike.

The AA’s recommended route in the Yorkshire Dales takes in Ingleton waterfall, described as one of the area’s “jewels”.
