The cast of The Office now from family tragedy to co-star feud rumours

0

The Office originally aired on the BBC in 2001 and the mockumentary followed the lives of employees at the Wernham Hogg paper company.

Although only two six-episode series were made, followed by a two-part Christmas special, it has become one of the most successful British comedies.

Written and directed by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, the former also starred as David Brent.

Today Ricky celebrates his 62nd birthday, making him the oldest of the original cast members.

Express.co.uk has all you need to know about where the stars are 20 years on.

Ricky Gervais as David Brent

David was the general manager in the office and he was known for his ignorance and social awkwardness.

Thinking he was funny and respected by his colleagues, they actually felt the opposite way about him.

Besides celebrating his 62nd birthday today, the actor and comedian has recently been spotted with his partner Jane Fallon for the first time since her cancer scare.

Jane had shared a photo of herself with a small freckle on her face as she wrote on Twitter: “Goodbye ‘thing on my face’. You tried to hide under a freckle, but now you’ve grown into something potentially more worrying, you have to go…”

He also set the record straight on rumours he had received death threats over his “anti-woke jokes” while on tour with his new stand-up comedy show, Armageddon.

It was reported that the comedian was increasing his security arrangements but he confirmed on Twitter: “1. Haven’t increased security. 2. My tour started a year ago.

“3. Haven’t had any death threats. Apart from that, this story is spot on.”

Martin Freeman as Tim Canterbury

Tim was one of the sales reps whose humour and kindness made him one of the office favourites.

Martin Freeman, now 51, has been through difficult times having lost his brother, singer-songwriter Jamie Freeman, to brain cancer in December.

He is currently working on a new film called Miller’s Girl, in which he will play Jonathan Miller.

The star also confirmed his return to the Marvel series Secret Invasion.

Fellow Marvel actor Benedict Cumberbatch had worked with Martin on the Sherlock series and there had been rumours of a feud between the pair.

It comes after Martin made comments to The Telegraph about not enjoying Sherlock, saying: “By the fourth season, making Sherlock has become kind of impossible.”

Benedict then told The Telegraph: “It’s pretty pathetic if that’s all it takes to let you not want to take a grip of your reality. What, because of expectations? I don’t know. I don’t necessarily agree with that.”

Neither appear to have spoken out about the feud rumours.

Mackenzie Crook as Gareth Keenan

Gareth was one of Tim’s biggest enemies as the cold-hearted jobsworth of the group.

Mackenzie Crook, now 51, hit headlines in February this year when he appealed publicly for help to find his missing sister-in-law, Laurel Aldridge.

Having been diagnosed with cancer the year previously, she went missing in West Sussex after failing to attend a chemotherapy appointment.

The Office star appeared on Good Morning Britain to ask for help with the search and a body was found on February 25.

On March 2 it was confirmed the body was that of his missing sister-in-law.

Lucy Davis as Dawn Tinsley

Dawn was the receptionist who tried her best to put up with Brent’s attempts at social interaction.

Lucy Davis, now 50, has wowed fans with her latest career move as she turned her attention to weight lifting.

The star has taken to Instagram to share updates on her progress and in one post she joked: “55lb single arm deadlifts. I can’t get up from my chair. Send help.”

Her incredible weight loss was also noticed when she attended the wrap party for season two of Disney’s The Villain’s of Valley View in May this year.

Her followers told her she looked “amazing” as she shared: “What a fabulous bunch of people we get to work with. Our crew and cast are wonderful and kind and brilliant. Plus also the cake was nice.”

Stirling Gallacher as Jennifer Taylor-Clarke

Jennifer was made a partner of the firm after the first season and enjoyed the superior.

Stirling Gallacher, now 52, has just celebrated her 14 year wedding anniversary with her husband Sean Gleeson.

The mother-of-two had married her Doctor Who co-star in 2009.

She can be seen on screens as Ffion Morgan in Casualty.

Oliver Chris as Ricky Howard

Ricky was a recent graduate who became Brent’s new temporary member of staff.

Oliver Chris, now 44, has recently starred in the ITV series Maternal and is working on a new project called Rivals.

In 2020 he opened up in a column for The Guardian about theatre director Nick Hytner calling him the “most disreputable actor he’d worked with”.

He said: “On One Man, Two Guvnors, laughter was banned in the rehearsal room. That was largely my fault. I kept messing about. He stopped a rehearsal and tore strips off me in front of everybody.”

Ralph Ineson as Chris “Finchy” Finch

Chris was known as the office bully who targeted his colleagues with cruel personal attacks.

Ralph Ineson, now 53, has had a busy year appearing in The Pope’s Exorcist, To Catch a Killer and The Creator.

He is now working on another project called Nosferatu, which is yet to hit cinemas.

In terms of his TV roles he has recently been seen in The Gallows Pole and The Legend of Vox Machina.

Patrick Baladi as Neil Godwin

Neil was made Brent’s immediate superior which of course did not go down well.

Patrick Baladi, now 51, was most recently seen in episodes of The Playlist and Sister Boniface Mysteries.

Stacey Roca as Rachel

Rachel was a flirtatious member of staff who started a relationship with Tim.

Stacey Roca, now 44, went on to star in legal drama Bull, as Tracey Brennan.
