Dust and dirt can collect in hard to reach areas of your radiator, and this can build up over time. However, if you’ve ever been tempted to reach for your favourite cleaning products you may want to think again.
Damon Culbert, spokesperson Radiance Fireplaces has warned Britons not to use cleaning products when tackling their radiator, particularly as such cleaning hacks see a surge on TikTok.
In fact, by doing so, Britons could risk both their health and their home.
Mr Culbert said: “There has been a sharp increase in the number of radiator cleaning videos featuring ‘trendy’ anti-bacterial cleaning products such as Fabulosa and Zoflora products mixed with boiling water to pour through radiator fins.
“Anti-bacterial products, especially aerosols and sprays should never be used on a radiator.

Radiance Fireplaces said: “Some Zoflora products specifically contain a fire warning – ‘Keep away from heat, hot surfaces, sparks, open flames and other ignition sources.’
“And the Fabulosa products used on the TikTok video clearly state that the product is extremely flammable and should therefore be kept away from heat and all sources of ignition.
“Whilst Zoflora does encourage some specific products for use when cleaning a radiator, it does not apply to all of their merchandise and therefore users must carefully read the warning message on the back of their product before use.”
However, just because some products can not be used does not mean people should push radiator cleaning to one side.
In fact, Mr Culbert says radiators should be regularly cleaned, especially during the winter.
“Then, blow away any excess cobwebs using the cold setting on your hairdryer.
“After that, mix hot water and a gentle fairy liquid and pour it in between the fins of your radiator, catching the water with a bowl beneath.
“Afterwards, make sure that you fully wipe down the radiator with a cloth, ensuring that all connectors are bone dry because any of the soap and water mixture entering into your radiator’s system could cause a lot of potential damage if your fittings aren’t watertight. “
