The Eagles all but define the country-rock movement of the 1970s. Since they formed in (where else?) Los Angeles in 1971, they’ve garnered no fewer than five number one singles and six number one albums. Add five American Music Awards and Six Grammy Awards, and you’ve got the makings of a classic band that’s also one of the most successful musical acts of the 1970s and beyond.
The founding members of the band included guitarist and vocalist Glenn Frey, who died of various illnesses and complications in 2016, drummer Don Henley, bassist and vocalist Randy Meisner, and guitarist and vocalist Bernie Leadon. Each made names for themselves in their own right, separate from the band.
On July 27, 2023, the band released a statement announcing that Randy Meisner had passed at the age of 77, making him the second original band member to die after Glenn Frey. Randy’s death was attributed to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease (COPD) in the Eagles’ official release.
Here, Bernie Leadon, Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Randy Meisner, Don Felder, are seen gathering in the early 1970s. As the world mourns the death of the Eagles’ second founding member, click through to see photos of the legendary country-rock hitmakers.
