The fastest way to defrost your car as temperatures plummet and snow hits UK

As snow and low temperatures hit many parts of the UK, drivers will be reaching their cars on the driveway to be faced with frozen doors, iced-over windscreens and stuck door mirrors. But there are fast and effective ways to get rid of frost according to motoring organisation The AA.

Check your wipers
Make sure the wipers aren’t on before switching the car on.
If wipers are frozen to the glass, the wiper motor could be damaged or the rubber could tear off if they start wiping.

Switch on the engine
Start the engine and turn on the warm air blower on the windscreen.
Switch on the front and rear windscreen heaters and heated mirrors, if they’re available

Meanwhile the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) warned stopping distances can be “10 times greater” on frosty roads in a major safety risk to road users. They also urged drivers to “keep well back” from cars in front and to take extra care when overtaking others this winter.

Posting on Twitter, the DVSA said: “When driving in icy or snowy weather, drive with care, even if the roads have been treated.

“Keep well back from the road user in front as stopping distances can be 10 times greater than on dry roads.

“Take care when overtaking vehicles spreading salt.”
