Frank Warren says there are ‘no problems’ making Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk, with a suitable location for the showdown now being sought.
IBF, WBO and WBA champion Usyk successfully defended his titles in his rematch against Anthony Joshua on Saturday with WBC king Fury immediately signalling his intent to fight the Ukrainian for all four world titles.
Talks to crown the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis have resumed in the days that followed, with speculation suggesting the fight could take place in Saudi Arabia on 17 December – the day before the World Cup final in Qatar.
While Fury’s promoter Warren insists there is no site deal in place yet, he says ‘the fight is made’ and is set to take place before the end of the year.
‘We had conversations before the fight,’ Warren told IFL TV. ‘They [Usyk and his promoters] are free agents. Alex [Krassyuk, Usyk’s promoter] and Egis [Klimas, Usyk’s manager] are good people, we won’t have a problem making this fight.
‘It is where it takes place is the issue and generating the income to satisfy both boxers.’
Warren continued: ‘The fight is made. Both fighters want it so there is no big problem getting this fight made. It is where it takes place and how we satisfy the boxers’ financial demands That’s it really.’
Responding to reports that the fight will take place in Saudi Arabia on 17 December, Warren said: ‘No conversations. We have not had a conversation with them about it. At the moment, it is a fighter that both fighters want to make. A historical fight. I’ts probably the biggest fight since Ali vs Frazier.’
The Queensberry Promotions chief confirmed they hope to have the fight take place before the end of the year, ruling out the possibility of it taking place at Wembley Stadium with Cardiff’s Principality Stadium not an option despite its retractable roof.
Fury vacated his Ring Magazine title earlier this month, which Usyk added to his collection on Saturday.
WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman meanwhile has suggested in Fury has a deadline of Friday 26 August to confirm his next move having reiterated a promise to retire from boxing just two weeks ago.
But with a clear path to making the undisputed fight, Warren insists there are no obstacles. ‘There is no problem.
‘Tyson has no mandatory [defence] due and he is going to defend his title and participate in a unification fight.’
