The Nashville Zoo in Tennessee recently welcomed a species known as “The Spotted Fanaloka”. The zoo is celebrating the newborn’s arrival because it is the species that is the firstborn spotted fanaloka in the United States of America.
The newborn fanaloka at the Nashville Zoo is a male. He is currently living along with his parents in the zoo’s enclosure. The newborn and his parents are the only fanaloka species living at an American zoo.
According to the zoo authorities, fanaloka also known as Malagasy Civets are small carnivores originally from Madagascar. The species is closely related to a mongoose. They are listed as vulnerable species by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The number of these species has reduced due to deforestation and hunting.
The spotted fanalokas are known as the second-largest predators in Madagascar. They prey on small mammals, reptiles, aquatic animals, big eggs, and insects.
While speaking to the press release, one of the zoo’s members stated that they are honoured to have the species here. It is also an honour for them to help and conserve these vulnerable species.
