The Flash’s Superman star cameo spoiled by director and it’s not Henry Cavill

Next month The Flash hits cinemas, taking Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen on a time travelling, multiverse-traversing DC adventure.

Both Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton are reprising their incarnations of Batman and there are even unconfirmed rumours of George Clooney making a cameo.

Henry Cavill may have been dropped from the franchise’s future by new DC Studios boss James Gunn, despite his cameo at the end of Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam, but a variant of his Superman alongside Sasha Calle’s Supergirl have been heavily rumoured.

And now director Andy Muschietti has spilt the beans ahead of the film’s release in June.

Rumour has it that Nicolas Cage’s Superman fights a giant mechanical spider in The Flash.

And Muschietti confirmed this in an interview with Esquire Middle East saying: “Nic was absolutely wonderful. Although the role was a cameo, he dove into it… I dreamt all my life to work with him. I hope I can work with him again soon. He is a massive Superman fan. A comic book fanatic.”

This is the most incredible Easter egg. As Comic Book movie fans are well aware, the star was cast in Kevin Smith’s Superman Lives back in the 1990s.

Batman and Batman Returns director Tim Burton was signed on to direct for a pay-or-play contract of $5 million. Meanwhile, Cage had the same to play Superman but for a whopping $20 million.

Cage believed he could “reconceive the character” and Burton thought his casting would be “the first time you would believe that nobody could recognise Clark Kent as Superman, he could physically change his persona.”

The star had a costume fitting in the Superman suit while sporting long hair, but by April 1998 Warner Bros had put the movie on hold even though they’d already spent $30 million on it. Two years later Cage dropped out of the project but would end up voicing Superman in the animated movie Teen Titans Go! To the Movies. And now he’s finally embodied his take in the upcoming DC blockbuster.

The Flash hits cinemas on June 16, 2023.
