Poster listing rules to avoid at the 2022 FIFA World Cup is not an official release. The graphic poster was issued by a citizens group
With the FIFA World Cup 2022 approaching, a list of rules allegedly issued by the host country, Qatar, has been widely circulated on social media. Presented in English and Arabic, the poster says that people coming to Qatar should respect the religion and culture of the natives of Qatar and avoid certain things for that. The rules forbid visitors from drinking alcohol, homosexuality, immodesty, profanity, not respecting places of worship, loud music and sounds, dating, and taking people’s pictures without their permission. These are supposedly official rules for football fans that have been widely criticized online for being conservative.
Fact Check
We started our search with the reverse image to verify the picture’s authenticity, which led us to official Twitter handle of the FIFA World Cup 2022 tournament called ‘Road to 2022’, which states that the graphic is factually incorrect and was not uploaded by an official source.
Later in the search, we noticed the hashtag “#Reflect Your Respect” in the bottom left corner of the poster. When we searched for this hashtag on Twitter, we found the account “Show Your Respect (@RYRQatar”.
It had the same profile picture as the logo on the poster. The account’s bio read, “We contribute to the consolidation of Islamic values and principles that support the Qatari identity”. The viral poster was shared on 1st October 2022.
According to the media reports, “Reflect Your Respect” is a grass-root campaign started by a group of Qatari women in 2014. The campaign aims to promote “modest dresses” among expatriate residents and visitors, among other things.
This evidence clearly shows that the graphic poster containing the FIFA World Cup guidelines was not shared by the official board.
Conclusion
Fact Crescendo found that the poster shared by a local group in Qatar is being misrepresented as government guidelines for tourists attending the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar. The viral claim is False.
