Winter is closing in, which means only one thing… it’s time to tackle a new series. Best-selling novel Fleishman Is In Trouble is taking the silver screen in its Disney+ adaption, and book lovers cannot wait.
The show has confirmed a cast worthy boasting about, so prepare to spot some familiar faces. Author, Taffy Brodesser-Akner, will also make her TV writing debut as the screenwriter for the series, so the nostalgia from the book will be sure to translate on screen.
On 22nd February 2023 all eight episodes in the mini-series will be available to stream in the UK on Disney+. BRB, blocking out that day in the calendar. As for what to expect…
What’s Fleishman Is In Trouble about?
The mini-series follows protagonist, Toby Fleishman, in his endeavours as a newly single man seeming quite optimistic about his post-divorce opportunities, be that in life, dating apps, his career and his newfound freedom. Having married his former wife Rachael at the end of medical school, years of bickering led the couple astray, and Toby finally felt ready to embrace the sexual freedom that he never experienced in his youth. That is until his ex-wife drops off the face of the planet, leaving him with his 11-year-old and 9-year-old children with no explanation, and a big deviation in his summer plans.
The plot synopsis states, “As he balances parenting, the return of old friends Libby and Seth, a potential promotion at the hospital that is a long time coming – and all the eligible women that Manhattan has to offer – he realises that he’ll never be able to figure out what happened to Rachael until he can finally face what happened to their marriage in the first place”.
Is there a trailer?
FX have just released the first trailer of the mini-series and the sky really does seem the limit for the list of themes this series seems to cover.
The trailer says it itself, “This is a story about everything. It’s about life and marriage, how young love can become old resentment and money, and dissatisfaction, and jealousy, ambition, career, parenting, nostalgia, and lifelong friendship”. Thus, reflecting on his prolonged relationship and the how and the why behind their strayed marriage.
The opening scene of the trailer hears a narrator say, “Toby Fleishman awoke one morning inside the city he lived in all his adult life”. She continues, “many thoughts had crossed Toby’s mind in the hours since he was informed that his ex-wife dropped the kids off a full day earlier than expected”. Complementary visuals show Toby appearing quite lost, confused and frantic – a seemingly reasonable and relatable response to the turn of events.
Frequent clips of the image rotating are quite reflective of Toby’s own life, narrated by Toby’s college friend – Libby, having quite literally been turned upside down. The trailer touches on marriage, divorce, losing sight of what is important in modern relationships as well as dealing with gender roles, online dating and the damaging repercussions of money. Also, just the utterly, complete unexpectedness of life itself – something we can probably all relate to.
Who’s in it?
Starring Claire Danes, Lizzy Caplan and Jesse Eisenberg I think it’s safe to say the cast lineup is pretty impressive.
The role of Toby Fleishman is played by Jesse Eisenberg, best known for his role in ‘The Social Network’, who will feature alongside Emmy-winning actress, Claire Danes, playing Toby’s ex-wife, Rachael.
The power duo will also be joined by Lizzy Caplan as Toby’s friend Lizzy. Toby’s children will be played by Meara Mahoney Gross and Maxim Swinton.
We won’t ruin it all for you, but the wider cast looks pretty good too.
