The Horror of Dolores Roach’s Justina Machado Praises Producer for Bringing in Counselors

Blumhouse’s The Horror of Dolores Roach follows the tale of the titular character as she returns to Manhattan’s Washington Heights following a 16-year prison sentence. Dolores, portrayed by Justina Machado, finds that things have changed in her hometown; gentrification has taken over, and familiar faces are hard to find. But she does link up with her stoner friend, Luis (Alejandro Hernandez), the owner of a local shop, Emapanda Loca. Luis offers up his shop’s basement to Dolores, where she begins to work as a massage therapist. Her new career is off to a good start, even earning her the nickname “Magic Hands,” but when a tense situation with a customer turns deadly, things start to unravel. Dolores descends into a life of killing, and things get even weirder when Luis begins to use the flesh of Dolores’ victims to stuff his empanadas.

Described as “a contemporary Sweeney Todd-inspired urban legend of love, betrayal, weed, cannibalism and survival of the fittest,” the upcoming series tackles grim topics like murder, deceit, and cannibalism. In a recent conversation with AboutAmazon, Machado shared how series producer Gloria Calderón Kellett acted proactively to help the cast maneuver those difficult themes:

“Gloria is always so thoughtful. Because this series deals with such heavy topics, she went above and beyond to bring in a team of counselors we could talk to as we worked. Everyone thought it was weird at first, but it ended up being an amazing resource. She’s just always making sure everyone is taken care of,” Machado said.

Machado and Calderón Kellett previously collaborated on the Emmy Award-winning series One Day at a Time, where Machado starred as single mom and veteran Penelope. The popular show was based on Norman Lear’s 1975 series of the same name.

The Horror of Dolores Roach is based on the podcast created, written and directed by Aaron Mark. The popular podcast of the same name piqued the interest of famed horror production company Blumhouse, who produced the upcoming comedy horror series. Machado teased that fans of the podcast will love the series.

“There will be some differences, but the core of the story and the characters you grew to love are in the show. We worked hard to keep the whole essence and tone the same as the podcast,” she said.

Machado had high praise for the series, saying that “everything about it is incredible” and that she has never seen a show like it.

The Horror of Dolores Roach stars Machado as Dolores and Hernandez as Luis. The cast also includes Kita Updike as Nellie Morris, an empanada shop employee and Todd Freeman as Jeremiah, a local drug dealer who works for Luis. Series guest stars include Cyndi Lauper, Marc Maron, Jean Yoon, Judy Reyes, and Jeffery Self. Mark serves as co-showrunner and executive producer alongside Dara Resnik. Daphne Rubin-Vega (who voiced Dolores Roach on the podcast), Blumhouse Television’s Jason Blum, Chris McCumber, Jeremy Gold, and Chris Dickie, Spotify’s Dawn Ostroff, Mimi O’Donnell, and Justin McGoldrick, GloNation Studios’ Calderón Kellett, and Roxann Dawson serve as executive producers. Dawson directs the pilot episode.

The Horror of Dolores Roach premieres July 7 on Prime Video.
