Our resident beer writer (best job in the world, right?!) has sipped his way through everything from Emu Bitter to double hazy triple-IPAs.
Trying out this week’s sip, Jay Rooney gives his verdict on the Tinnie of the Week and whether it’s worth cracking one with a mate.
BEER NAME?
Slothcake Imperial Stout
WHERE’S IT FROM
Maylands-based microbrewery Seasonal Brewing Co teamed up with craft beer haven Dutch Trading Co to celebrate the latter’s seventh birthday with this winter delight.
After opening in 2019, Seasonal has produced brews from core range pale ales and IPAs to NEIPAs, saisons and baltic porters.
Slothcake is a limited release at the perfect time for stout lovers.
WHAT’S SO SPECIAL ABOUT IT?
It was named after sloth, one of the seven deadly sins, and is brewed with seven key ingredients — malted barley, rolled oats, lactose, cherries, hazelnut, almonds and vanilla.
Pouring a rich, black body with a tanned, fluffy head, there are hints of dark chocolate and cherry on the nose — just like a black forest cake.
But for those who don’t like their stouts overloaded with sweetness, Slothcake delivers a beautiful balance between decadence and roasted bitterness consistent with most stouts.
The lactose provides a pleasant, creamy mouthfeel before a bitter finish.
SHOULD I SHARE IT?
Coming in at a strong 8.5 per cent ABV, Slothcake is indulgent enough to share with mates as an after-dinner delight and ideal on a cold, winter’s night.
WHAT’S THE DAMAGE?
About $9 for a single can.
RATING?
3.5 out of 5
