The 2023 iteration of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas has just wrapped up, and as we race forward in the tech world, automakers were keen to let us know they want to be a key driver in that space, revealing a host of new vehicles and innovations at the exhibition.

After you’ve caught up on the myriad dazzling new things automakers showed off, soak in these takes that the good ol’ Internet chimed in with during the show.
Let’s start with the most peculiarly named vehicle at CES 2023, the AFEELA, a joint venture between Sony and Honda. (And one we’re not all-caps-ing again.) Yes, it looks cool. Yes, collaborations like this help keep costs down for companies while keeping intrigue up. However, we’d offer that the name isn’t great. Memorable, but not great.
Sony and Honda explained that “Afeela expresses an interactive relationship where people ‘FEEL’ mobility as an intelligent entity, and mobility ‘FEEL’s’ people and society using sensing and network IT technologies.” They should’ve called it the “PS Drive,” if you ask us.

Our own Andrew McCredie wrote in his take on the Volkswagen ID.7 that “the all-electric sedan’s camouflage paint job is some 40 layers deep and features 22 areas that can be controlled separately, and are electrified below the top layer of paint (via electroluminescence) so that they light up.” Okay, neat. “Connect it to a sound system, and the bumping beats are visualized by illumination of those individual areas.” Now we’re talking! But let’s not heap on too much praise, when there’s snark to be had.

Also revealed at CES 2023: BMW’s i Vision Dee, where the “Dee” stands for “Digital Emotional Experience,” a car that can change colours with the touch of a button. (Seems to be the hip new thing this year.) More impressively, it can transform the windshield into a full-on augmented-reality (AR) screen display.
