The Lady of Silence: The Mataviejitas Murders is the chilling new true crime documentary that you should brace yourself for.
Yes, just when you think you have seen enough docs on the plethora of shocking acts committed by criminals across the globe, there’s always another that comes along to make you lose all faith in humanity and double-check those locks on your door.
And the notorious Mexican serial killer Juana Barraza, who was dubbed “The Little Old Ladykiller” by various media outlets, is the topic of Netflix’s latest crime offering, The Lady of Silence: The Mataviejitas Murders.
Coming to the streaming service late in July, the documentary looks back at the horrifying spate of murders in Mexico City in the early noughties, which all saw older ladies being strangled in their own homes.

With the murders generating outrage nationwide and extensive media coverage, the pressure piled on at the time to capture Mexico’s first serial killer.
The task was especially difficult for the Attorney General’s Office, which employed all its resources to capture the killer, with witnesses describing the suspect as “tall, robust, and strong, passing off as a nurse to earn the victims’ trust”.
