When it comes to Disney songs, there are some that are so iconic they have been parodied, covered and referenced over and over again in pop culture. One of those is The Little Mermaid’s Under the Sea, and a newly released clip from the upcoming Disney remake has revealed the new version of the song for the first time in a clip shared by Entertainment Weekly.
There has been much discussion about whether the latest Disney live-action remake can overcome the kind of complaints that surrounded The Lion King when it comes to showing emotion in the CGI renditions of some classic animal characters. While it is unlikely this version of Sebastian’s underwater ditty will replace the original animated version, there clip certainly answers the question of just how much emotion can be put into the aquatic creatures of The Little Mermaid. Check out the clip below.
The Little Mermaid has been cranking up the marketing machine with the movie now less than two weeks away from hitting theaters. From the initial ruckus over the casting of Halle Bailey as the titular Disney princess, there has been nothing but positivity around the movie as its cinematic debut approaches. This has included support from the original Ariel and a first wave of reviews that have heaped praise upon the movie’s young star.
Is The Little Mermaid the Best Live-Action Disney Remake yet?
There are always those who will never see a remake as being anything other than a cash grab. Others love any and every different take on a story that they can get their hands on. When it comes to The Little Mermaid, the jury is still out over whether the movie will be one of the biggest Disney live-action remakes or sink into the murk. If the first reviews are anything to go by, then it certainly looks like the film is going to give The Super Mario Bros. Movie a good run for the highest grossing movie of the year.
While there has been plenty of positive words about the look of the movie, the direction of Rob Marshall, and the heard and soul of the original animated classic being retained in the new, flashy CGI world, the biggest plaudits have been aimed directly at Halle Bailey as Ariel. Her singing has been said to be exceptional throughout the movie, and the original Little Mermaid Jodi Benson added her praise, noting “her pure spirit, the joy, the love, her unbelievable vulnerability, her authenticity, her bravery, her courage… it’s just beautiful. Beautiful telling of the Ariel story. I’m so proud of her.”
Although there are some still to be won over by the latest attempt by Disney to reinvigorate their back catalogue, there are not many people who would bet against The Little Mermaid taking the top spot at the worldwide box office on its opening weekend, and hurtling past many of the year’s previous releases as one of the biggest movies of the year. The Little Mermaid is released on May 26.
