A video has gone viral on social media in it a man walking unsteadily and falling into what seems to be an open drain. The video is being circulated with the claim that the incident took place in Borivali East. Mumbai, like many other parts of the country, has witnessed heavy rainfall since the beginning of July.
Fact Check-
By conducting a reverse image search on one of the video’s key frames, we discovered that News 18 uploaded a clip of a similar event on Twitter on 18 August, 2022, saying that it occurred in Hosur, Tamil Nadu
Keeping this in mind, by closely observing the viral video we noticed that shop signs and signboards on the streets were written in Tamil. With this hint a keyword search on Google led us to a YouTube video uploaded on the Kannada news channel Asianet Suvarna News. The video was uploaded on 4 August 2022 and was titled, “An old man who fell into the drain while drunk; Video viral”. The description of the video states that the incident took place in Hosur, Tamil Nadu.
In further search we found an article by The Free Press Journal published on 5August, 2022. The report states that a middle aged man who was reportedly drunk and unable to balance himself after getting off a bike and fell into the drain in Hosur, Tamil Nadu. Luckily, he was saved from a near-death experience by locals who pulled him out of a nearby opening.
Further, as per the video report by regional news agency Samayam Tamil, the man accidentally fell into the drain while trying to cross the road. The report adds that the Hosur road was flooded due to continuous rain for about three hours. This report was published on 4 August, 2022. After the rescue, the man was taken to a government hospital for additional medical care.
Conclusion-
Fact Crescendo found the claim made along with the viral video to be False. This viral video shows a man falling into an open drain in Hosur, Tamil Nadu in August 2022. It is not related to the present rainfall in Mumbai.
