“I’ve been chasing space my entire life,” says Sian Proctor, PhD, the first Black woman to pilot a spacecraft as part of SpaceX’s Inspiration4 mission last fall. While her father, Edward, worked on the Apollo Mission at the NASA Tracking Station in Guam, Dr. Proctor was at home building model airplanes and dreaming of becoming a fighter pilot and astronaut. Years later, “life happened” and she decided to study geoscience instead — but Dr. Proctor never forgot her love of space. She eventually started working with NASA as a simulation astronaut, investigating food strategies for long-duration space flights.
When the opportunity came to join Inspiration4, she jumped at the chance. During orbit, Dr. Proctor, who is also an artist, created a series of drawings and paintings inspired by her experience, which she recently published alongside her original poetry. Today, she is sharing her passion for outer space in the form of an immersive art exhibition that she’ll produce as an artist in-residence at Arizona State University. Below, Dr. Proctor shares the beauty products she uses in a typical day, here, on planet Earth.
“Living in Phoenix, moisture doesn’t stay in my Afro hair. Hask Keratin Protein Smoothing Shampoo and Conditioner enrich my texture. I condition my hair every day and shampoo once a week.”
“With melanin-rich skin, it’s hard to find moisturizers that don’t leave a white cast. I missed my Olay Total Effects 7-in-1 Moisturizer while in space. It keeps my skin hydrated without having to be aggressively rubbed in. I use Aveeno Skin Relief 24-Hour Moisturizing Lotion first thing after the shower every morning.”
“When I first cut my hair short, my hairstylist used Proclaim Crystal Protein Styling Gel to style it. It doesn’t weigh my hair down and leaves it feeling soft. I love dyeing my hair now that it’s short. I have red highlights, but I’ve also gone blonde.”
“After running a mile tracking my fitness with my Apple Watch, I’ll start my day with Pukka Lemongrass & Ginger tea. It helps boost my immune system.”
“Nest New York Indian Jasmine Perfume Oil Rollerball has a relaxing, earthy scent and can easily fit in my carry-on [when I’m traveling]. The roller allows me to control the placement versus spritzing it all over.”
“Before going to space, I started tracking my sleep with the Oura Ring. I’d say I’m a C+ trying to become an A- sleeper and this data helps me try to achieve that. I never take it off unless I’m in the shower or it needs to be charged.”
“For background music during the day, I listen to classical music on my Google Home. I don’t own a TV, but I sometimes watch Netflix as I draw a bath before bed with my Solar System
Bath Time Bonzos bath bomb. I like anything space-themed.”
