Flopping has drawn magnified scrutiny during the NBA playoffs, with several critics believing the practice has gotten out of hand. The league could reportedly address the issue this offseason.
According to Shams Charania of Stadium and The Athletic, the NBA’s Competition Committee is considering a potential rule change that would access a technical foul to a player who flops. The NBA could test out the procedure during Summer League.

Flopping isn’t new, but NBA players continue to increasingly fall and overexaggerate contact in hopes of drawing foul calls.
During their second-round series against the Los Angeles Lakers, Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr implored the NBA to crack down on the practice.
“I think we should address it, because the players are so smart, and the entire regular season is about gamesmanship and trying to fool the refs,” Kerr said, via NBC Sports. And this is how it’s been for a while, and it’s up to us as a league. Do we want to fix this?”
During his “personal plea,” Kerr pointed to FIBA’s rule against flopping.
“If a referee deems a player has flopped, they just call it a technical foul, and it’s pretty penalizing,” Kerr said. “And so the flopping has basically been eliminated from FIBA, and we have the ability to do the same thing in the NBA if we want.”
Implementing this rule would certainly come with challenges. Determining whether a player flopped is highly subjective, and there will be instances of someone embellishing contact on a play that justifies a foul.
Reviewing possible flops may also irk viewers as much as the actual flopping.
Some may consider these roadblocks worthwhile hassles if it diminishes flopping in the NBA.
