The NBA Is Trying Out A New Anti-Flopping Penalty In Summer League

The NBA will use the Summer League as testing grounds for a proposed anti-flopping rule.

On Tuesday, the NBA announced an in-game penalty that will go into effect on a trial basis this summer. If the officials deem a player flopped, the other team will receive a free throw and possession of the ball.

The non-unsportsmanlike technical foul wouldn’t count as a personal foul or lead to an ejection. Refs don’t have to immediately stop play to issue a flopping foul.

Flopping became a hot-button issue during the NBA playoffs when Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr called out the Los Angeles Lakers during their second-round series. He implored the NBA to consider issuing a technical foul, which is already FIBA protocol.

“If a referee deems a player has flopped, they just call it a technical foul, and it’s pretty penalizing,” Kerr told reporters in May. “And so the flopping has basically been eliminated from FIBA, and we have the ability to do the same thing in the NBA if we want.”

It will be interesting to see how the potential new rule is enforced during the Summer League. Flopping is subjective enough to cause some consternation, particularly in the early stages.

If the league likes what it sees, flopping could soon be punishable by a technical foul.
