However, the seaside resort of Lloret de Mar in Costa Brava is soaring in popularity again due to cheap deals on offer.

Popular with Brits since the 1970s, demand is booming for the resort which has fallen in popularity in recent years.

Data from Thomas Cook has found booking to Costa Brava have doubled (up 94 per cent) compared to last year.

Lloret de Mar has seen the biggest jump in bookings, nearly quadrupling year on year. (3.9 times or an increase of 290 per cent).

This makes it the fifth most popular place on the mainland, leaping more than 15 places from 2022.

Lloret de Mar was once a sleepy fishing village, before turning into a tourist hotspot with its many bars and clubs.

Tourists often flock to the famous beaches including Fenals Beach and Santa Cristina Beach, both of which are Blue Flag.

Other destinations soaring in popularity include Salou in Costa Dorada, as well as Costa Tropical with bookings twice the level compared to 2022.

Emma King, Thomas Cook’s head of product, said: “Brits are spreading their holiday wings this summer in Spain with the return of some classic spots like Lloret de Mar and Salou which offer great value compared to some of the more well known ‘costa lotta’ destinations.

“It’s great that families are trying lesser-known parts of the mainland, especially the city regions which are popular with locals but have been a little under the radar for Brits.

“For our customers who are looking to get more bang for their buck, Spain has something for every budget.”
