The Queen was helped to fulfil her ‘secret wish’ despite warnings from advisors

The Queen was helped to fulfil her “secret wish” by one of her closest aides, despite warnings from her advisors that it could “bring the monarchy down”.

Royal dresser Angela Kelly revealed that she had long known about Her Majesty’s “secret wish” to be photographed with her hands in her pockets.

However, both her aides and the Queen Mother were against this idea and deemed it “not suitable for the public eye”.

Some even believed that such casualness might “bring the monarchy down”.

But after years of sitting upright for official portraits, she longed for the freedom to be photographed more informally.

Kelly happily obliged and made the Monarch’s wish come true when working on her first book, asking her if she would consider modelling with her hands in her pockets.

She told the Daily Telegraph: “The Queen looked at me in amazement as I asked whether she knew the potential implications of the photographs.

“She didn’t take long to answer: yes, she would do it and, yes, she was sure.”

On the big day the Monarch knew exactly what she wanted and even gave the photographer, Barry Jeffery, the directions of how things would go.

The author quotes the Queen as saying: “No Barry, this is how we’re going to do it. Just keep the camera rolling.”

Kelly added: “And we were off. Her Majesty took her position in front of the lens and started striking a series of poses, slipping her hands in and out of her pockets and placing them onto her hips, mimicking the stances of a professional model.”

She was working with the Royal Collection at the time, which was publishing her book, but the extraordinary images were not well received.

“Their opinion was that these more candid photographs would bring the monarchy down and therefore they were not suitable for the public eye,” she revealed.

“Why they thought that, I have no idea”, she added.

The images were eventually made public by Hello!
