British artist Kate Williams makes large-scale, wall-hung quilts depicting imaginary postmodern buildings in empty landscapes, which she describes as “De Chirico transplanted to 1980s Miami”. “I’m interested in artifice and illusion, and in the playfulness of both postmodern architecture and 18th-century trompe l’oeil,” she says. “I hope there’s something mildly unsettling about these designs.”
