The Sandman bebuted earlier this year on Netflix, and while a second season has not been green lit, a lot of work has already been done on it.
Neil Gaiman may have been playing down the reality of The Sandman getting a second season on Netflix, having said that the viewer numbers may not be enough to get the green light on what has been a very expensive production. However, The Sandman’s VFX supervisor Ian Markiewicz has not been quite so coy and recently revealed in an interview with Screen Rant exactly how much work has already gone into the development of season 2.
The Sandman was a visually triumphant series on Netflix earlier this year, bringing to life Neil Gaiman’s characters in a way that only a decade ago would probably not have been possible. With an all-star cast including Tom Sturridge in the lead role of Morpheus/Dream, the fantasy realms created in the series were nothing short of breathtaking, and the storylines pulled from a number of Gaiman’s stories, although there are still a lot to be told. While discussing the second season, Markiewicz explained:
“We have a really wonderful framework for what we think season 2 looks like. Allan is still touching up scripts and reworking things, but we have an arc. Up until pretty recently, I think maybe even two weeks or so, Gary, our production designer, myself and Allan meet over lunch, and we will do a script over that meeting. It’s like, “Okay, let’s look at 201,” and we’ll do our breakdowns together, where we do page turns on 201, and we say, “Okay, what do we think? Where can we film this? Can we film this in a real space? If not, what do we need to build, if we need to build it? Are we building this as a physical set, or can it be a building as a virtual set or a combination thereof? Is it physical to a certain extent, and then digital beyond that?” Just trying to break each one down to be like, “What’s the most value for this, what’s the most sensible way that covers the need for what we need it to be?” That process is happening now, which is great, and it’s really fun and exciting to be able to sort of have season 1 and behind us to know what we feel worked there, things that we wanted to sort of finesse further, and how that impacts our approach for season 2.”
The Sandman Is Still Awaiting A Decision About It’s Fate…or So It Is Thought.
The Sandman landed in the Top 10 of Netflix when it was released and has been there for a number of weeks since. However, while there has been a lot of caution from its creator about whether the series will be returning, there could be another reason for the radio silence about its fate. Netflix’s TUDUM event.
The annual online event TUDUM is the time that Netflix make a whole host of big reveals, exclusive clip releases and premiere new trailers and release dates. This year’s event takes place later this month and is already lined up with exciting announcements about The Witcher, Stranger Things, and more. Could Netflix be holding off on a Sandman reveal to make a big announcement at TUDUM? We will soon find out, and it is certainly something fans will be hoping for with bated breath.
