The sneaky way to get the best meal on the plane – without paying any extra

THERE’S a sneaky way people can not only get the best meal on a flight, but also get their food before everyone else.

Plane food is not always the best but there are ways that passengers can make it better.

One way to do that is to order a certain meal, which is not only said to be better quality than others, but will be brought out before all the others.

The advice comes from Victoria Baillie, Skyscanner PR Manager, who revealed which food people should order on Skyscanner’s website, according to the Express.

She said: “Choose the Asian-vegetarian option on the plane.

“You get fed before anyone else, you avoid anything too greasy and stodgy (helps the jet lag allegedly) and I’m convinced the more niche meals are much better quality as they’re made in smaller batches.”

To order the meal, passengers have to select it in online or over the phone before they fly.

As it’s a specialist meal, it will be brought out first, before all the other passengers on board are provided their options.

The tactic is backed up by Caroline Kneitz, who worked as a flight attendant for Emirates for more than six years.

She explained that those who order special meals will always be served first, so that meal services will run smoother.

She told Mail Online: “If you’re sticking to plane food and want your food served early, then all you need to do is order a special meal such as vegan or Kosher.

“Special meals, which have to be pre-ordered in advance, are always dished out first.

“If you’re on a night flight getting your meal earlier is particularly useful as you can get to sleep quicker.”

Ordering the same meal with every airline isn’t the best idea, however, with some airlines offering tastier options than others.

Melissa Leong, a cookbook editor and frequent traveller, told Escape that passengers should research in-flight menus before their journey.

The Australian television host understood that many passengers are more inclined to opt for a more “Eurocentric” meal, but encouraged them to try the airlines’s native cuisine.

She also recommended some of her favourites from her years of travel.

She said: “Thai Airways’ curries, for instance, are really rather good.

“Japan Airlines’ bento boxes are super-cute and fantastic for people who like to pick at lots of little snacks/okazu.”

And one tourist has explained how she uses a free airport item to get nicer meals in the air.
