Our resident beer writer (best job in the world, right?!) has sipped his way through everything from Emu Bitter to double hazy triple-IPAs.

Trying out this week’s sip, Jay Rooney gives his verdict on the Tinnie of the Week.

And he’ll tell you whether it’s worth cracking one with a mate.

BEER NAME?

Watermelon Berliner Weisse

WHERE’S IT FROM?

Brewcha Libre, a Perth-based gypsy brewer.

WHAT’S SO SPECIAL ABOUT IT?

Brewcha Libre has celebrated its first birthday with a special treat in the form of a sweet and refreshing Watermelon Berliner Weisse.

The Perth gypsy brewer has delivered its “own take at a lolly bag”, with the sour beer inspired by owner and head brewer Ryan Walker’s favourite candies, watermelon-flavoured Chupa Chups and sour balls.

Pouring a peachy red with a light wispy head, Watermelon Berliner Weisse delivers aromas of sweet fruits with a hit of tartness to the nose.

A strong watermelon flavour dominates the palate, with a tang typical of most sour beers thrown in to help offset the sweetness.

The wheat style of the Berliner Weisse and the 6.2 per cent ABV – a much stronger level than most other sours – also helps cut the sweetness. There is also a hint of peach flavour to finish.

Watermelon Berliner Weisse is a great mix of sweet, sour and refreshing.

SHOULD I SHARE IT?

It’s definitely worth sharing with mates. Spread the word!

WHAT’S THE DAMAGE?

About $8 for a single can and $28 for a four-pack.

RATING?
