The stunning beach with amazing value luxury lodges and giant theme-park nearby

I’VE been to a few beaches in my time but when a pal raved about Filey in Yorkshire, I wanted to see what all the fuss was about.

A quick search online and I found glowing reports about sweeping sands, clear water and fabulous scenery — I just had to find out if it lived up to all the hype.

It seemed only sensible to book a stay at The Bay Filey, the name said it all and we’d heard good things from colleagues about the park owners Away Resorts, so were excited to see what they had to offer.

A few hours’ drive from home and my partner Colin and I were picking up our keys at reception and heading through secure gates to our lodge for the next few nights.

Our Exclusive Meadow Lodge had its own garden — as they all do — and was surrounded by trees and bushes adding to the homely feel.
Unlocking the door we entered what seemed like a Tardis. From the outside it looked a decent size but inside it was huge.

With high ceilings, whitewash walls and beach theme it put us right in the holiday mood straight away.

Everything was spotlessly clean and we were pleasantly surprised to find a wicker gift bag with organic coffee, tea, sugar and biscuits, just what we needed after our drive.

The lodge features two bedrooms and two bathrooms and a fully equipped kitchen including dishwasher and washing machine.

As gorgeous as it was inside, my favourite part was the deck just off the living room, through the patio doors.

The table and chairs offered gorgeous views of the lake and I spent my mornings out here, enjoying my coffee and watching the ducks swimming around. It was heavenly.

After a good night’s rest my daughter Ava, below, was raring to go swimming and we booked into Water Walkers.

It couldn’t have been easier to book. I downloaded the app to my phone, and I could choose any activity available during our stay.

They also have family archery, crafts and a slime workshop! The staff are all brilliant with the kids and everything you need is just a short walk away, including a choice of two restaurants, tennis court, gym, kids’ playground and a shop for all the essentials.

With the weather not playing ball, I still hadn’t set foot on Filey beach. But after reading so many good things about it I really had to see it for myself and, boy, it didn’t disappoint. It was just as beautiful as they say it is.

Located between Scarborough and Bridlington, Filey has been voted Yorkshire’s best beach and with its picturesque promenade, views as far as the eye can see and a beautiful five-mile stretch of sandy shoreline, it’s not hard to see why.

It’s the perfect place for a peaceful day basking in sunshine (I wish!), flying a kite or playing in the rock pools.

Back at the Bay Filey we spent our time walking in the grounds, dining in the restaurants and simply letting the stresses of life slip away.

It’s the perfect place to enjoy a gentler pace of life. You can take part in the activities or kick back, relax and breathe in the sea air.

But, if you’re looking for something a little more exhilarating, Flamingo Land is a 40-minute drive away and we love a good rollercoaster, so couldn’t resist.

There are plenty of rides to suit all ages, a great splash area for those hot days and a brilliant zoo with rhinos, giraffes, penguins and many more animals. Our day here flew by.

There no doubt about it, next time I’m looking for a beachside retreat for some fabulous R&R, it will have to the Bay Filey.
