The scammer fabricated not only their own identity and life events but that of around 60 characters, none of whom truly existed.
The show’s eye-catching artwork, with a patchwork-style image of different faces, is a testament to all the different characters “Bobby” made up.
Speaking of her grief over the deception, Assi told The Times in an interview earlier this month, “Imagine somebody really close to you had suddenly died, and it’s not one person, it’s all of them. I had lost everybody. Normally, even if you lose a boyfriend, your girlfriends come and look after you.”
The show is hosted by Tortoise’s Investigations Editor Alexi Mostrous together with Kirat. It consists of six episodes averaging around 40 minutes, together with a seventh bonus episode which offers a debrief of the series and a response to questions from the show’s listeners.
The description on Apple Podcast reads: “Kirat is a successful radio presenter. On Facebook she meets Bobby, a handsome cardiologist. He’s a catch. Soon, they get tangled up in a love affair full of lies and manipulation. Then… Kirat discovers a deception of almost unimaginable proportions.”
What follows, in podcast form, is a live, multi-part investigation into what happened, which looks into “one of the world’s most sophisticated catfishers.”
“It’s a story about who we are online, and how social media can be weaponised as a tool of abuse and coercion,” reads the official line on the Tortoise Media website.
